MEENAS

The Consortium of European Radiation Research Platforms aims are to:

  • promote the integration and the efficiency of European R&D in radiation protection to better protect humans (public, patients and workers) and environment;
  • advance scientific excellence;
  • develop and implement the joint R&D roadmap;
  • maintain and develop European research capacity;
  • encourage scientific education and training and foster key research infrastructures in the field of radiation protection;
  • foster international collaboration and collaboration with sister organisations and networks in a non-exclusive manner by open interaction with the wider research community and stakeholders.

European Radioecology Alliance

European Radioecology Alliance is an international network whose goal is to integrate the research programmes of partners involved in radioecology, more specifically in the field of the assessment of the impact of radioactive substances on humans and the environment.

In mid-2009, through the signature of a "memorandum of understanding", eight European organisations created the European Radioecology Alliance. The intention of the partners is, in the long term, to integrate all of their research programmes in the field of the assessment of the impact of radioactive substances on humans and the environment. It also involves maintaining and improving experimental skills and infrastructures within Europe.

On 5 December 2013 MELODI, the European Radioecology Alliance (ALLIANCE), NERIS and EURADOS have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to confirm their joint commitment towards the consolidation and implementation of a strategic vision of radiation protection research in Europe. This ceremony took place at the European Commission headquarters in Brussels, in presence of Bruno Schmitz, Head of Unit K4 “Fission” at the Directorate General for Research and Innovation.

EURADOS - European Radiation Dosimetry Group

EURADOS is registered in the German Register of Societies as a non-profit association for promoting research and development and European cooperation in the field of the dosimetry of ionizing radiation.

Members of our association are:

  • Voting Members (institutions)
  • Associate Members (persons)

Its financial resources originate from sponsoring institutions, from voting members, from levies raised for activities organized by EURADOS (annual meetings, training courses and intercomparison exercises), and from projects funded by the European Communities.

EURADOS maintains a network which includes experts, reference and research laboratories, and dosimetry services. This enables appropriate specialist groups to be formed in a timely manner to solve problems or promote research identified within EURADOS or upon request from external bodies.

MELODI - Multidisciplinary European Low Dose Initiative

MELODI is an European Platform dedicated to low dose radiation risk research. In 2010 MELODI was founded as a registerd association with 15 members.

The purpose of MELODI is:

  • MELODI will propose R&T priorities for Europe in its field of competence EUROPE 2020 Strategy.
  • MELODI will seek the views of stakeholders on the priorities for research, keep them informed on progress made, and contribute to the dissemination of knowledge.
  • MELODI will interface with international partners like WHO and IAEA.

SHARE - European platform for Social Sciences and humanities research relating to ionizing radiation

The mission of SHARE is to stimulate the integration of social sciences and humanities (SSH) in research, practice and policy related to ionizing radiation, including, for example: radiation protection, low dose risk, radioecology, emergency preparedness and response, dosimetry, medical applications, radioactive waste management, nuclear energy production, safety, NORM, site remediation, radon etc. To this end, SHARE structures and enhances dialogue at the European level and beyond, among the different stakeholders, fostering the sharing of knowledge and information among various disciplines working on aspects of ionizing radiation. SHARE was officially launched in July 2019 with the first General Assembly held in Barcelona after the RICOMET 2019 conference. It currently involves 24 organisations from 13 different countries.

SHARE organizes annual conference RICOMET. The conference is a unique opportunity to collect state-of-the-art, present and discuss projects or research results since it is an international, multidisciplinary and stakeholder driven event, devoted to academics, researchers, experts and civil society stakeholders involved in social science and humanities research on ionizing radiation. The conference includes scientific sessions, workshops, round tables, parallel meetings and is attended by participants working in the field of SSH and ionizing radiation.

A prospective Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) for Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) in radiological protection was developed by a collective of research institutes and universities. This is the first time such a research agenda has been proposed. Six research lines of interest and concern have been identified: (1) Effects of social, psychological and economic aspects on RP behaviour; (2) Holistic approaches to the governance of radiological risks; (3) Responsible research and innovation in RP; (4) Stakeholder engagement and participatory processes in RP research, development, policy and practice; (5) Risk communication; and (6) RP cultures. These topics were developed through broad stakeholder consultation, in conjunction with activities carried out in the framework of various projects and initiatives (EU H2020 CONCERT programme, the EU FP7 projects OPERRA, PREPARE and EAGLE, the 2015–2018 RICOMET series of conferences, and the 2014 and 2016 International Symposia on Ethics of Environmental Health); as well as through dialogues with members of the European radiation protection research communities. The six research lines open opportunities to integrate a range of key social and ethical considerations into RP, thereby expanding research opportunities and programmes and fostering collaborative approaches to research and innovation.

NEA CRPPH - Committee on Radiation Protection and Public Health

The NEA's Committee on Radiation Protection and Public Health (CRPPH) is a valuable resource for its member countries.

The committee is made up of regulators and radiation protection experts, with the broad mission to provide timely identification of new and emerging issues, to analyse their possible implications and to recommend or take action to address these issues to further enhance radiation protection regulation and implementation.

The regulatory and operational consensus developed by the CRPPH on these emerging issues supports policy and regulation development in Member countries, and disseminates good practice.

HERCA - Heads of the European Radiological protection Competent Authorities

HERCA was created in 2007 at the initiative of the French Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN).

HERCA is a voluntary association in which the Heads of Radiation Protection Authorities work together in order to identify common issues and propose practical solutions for these issues. HERCA is working on topics generally covered by provisions of the EURATOM Treaty. The programme of work of HERCA is based on common interest in significant regulatory issues.

ICRP - International Commission on Radiological Protection

The work of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) helps to prevent cancer and other diseases and effects associated with exposure to ionising radiation, and to protect the environment.

Since 1928, ICRP has developed, maintained, and elaborated the International System of Radiological Protection used world-wide as the common basis for radiological protection standards, legislation, guidelines, programmes, and practice.

ICRP has published more than one hundred reports on all aspects of radiological protection. Most address a particular area within radiological protection, but a handful of publications, the so-called fundamental recommendations, each describe the overall system of radiological protection. The International System of Radiological Protection has been developed by ICRP based on (i) the current understanding of the science of radiation exposures and effects and (ii) value judgements. These value judgements take into account societal expectations, ethics, and experience gained in application of the system.

ICRP is an independent, international organisation with more than two hundred volunteer members from approximately thirty countries across six continents. These members represent the leading scientists and policy makers in the field of radiological protection.

ICRP is funded through a number of ongoing contributions from organisations with an interest in radiological protection.
